THE PROFESSOR T. L. RAMA CHAR MEMORIAL LECTURE

(Instituted 1989)

Professor T. L. Rama Char founded the Electrochemical Society of India as the India Section of the Electrochemical Society, USA, in the year 1954, while he was a Professor at the Department of inorganic and Physical Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Science. At the time he was one of the very few active scientists working in the area of Alloy Plating. He was the originator of the Sulpahammate Bath for plating alloys of iron and nickel. Later in the year 1962 realising the growing interest and activity in Electrochemical Research in the Country, he foresaw the need for an independent association for promoting the interests of Electrochemical Science and Technology in the Country and founded the ELECTROCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF INDIA, which was incorporated as a Society under the Societies Act, and formally registered with the Registrar of Societies in the state of Karnataka on 12 August 1962.
